Preliminary ESDM Assessment

An ESDM preliminary assessment is an assessment of your child’s skills across all developmental domains using the ESDM Curriculum Checklist.

During the assessment the therapist will be able to identify, in every area of development;

  • skills your child has mastered
  • skills that are emerging
  • skills that have not yet developed


The outcome of an ESDM Assessment is a clear baseline of your child’s skills and a comprehensive report detailing recommended supports and initial ESDM goals to begin to fill in the learning gaps that have acquired over time. 

This functional assessment report is useful to understand your child’s developmental levels and can be shared with other people in the ‘team around your child’ such as your Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist or Educators to help them support your child in their settings. 

It can also be a powerful piece of evidence to submit when applying for NDIS funding.

ESDM 1:1 Clinics

Our therapists are all trained to a high level to deliver the Early Start Denver Model.

The ESDM can be delivered in 1:1, Groups and in mainstream education settings.

1:1 ESDM therapy is a one hour individual clinic session with your child’s Key Worker (ESDM Therapist).

Your Key Worker will:

Parents build their capacity through observation of therapy sessions and engagement with your child’s therapist. All therapy sessions provide parents with opportunities to enhance everyday moments by integrating what has been observed in the therapy session into the home environment.

1:1 ESDM is a weekly session in your child’s program.

ESDM Clinic Program

The ESDM Clinic is the ideal introduction to the play partner approach of the ESDM. It prepares a child for both future therapies including ESDM Small Group Therapy.

The ESDM clinic is a high quality, highly intensive, one-to-one therapy with a certified ESDM therapist. The goal is to bridge the learning gaps that have accumulated over time and to construct the building blocks a child needs for social interaction.

1:1 sessions are delivered within a clinic setting and run for 1 hour, during which time all goals are targeted.

The therapist will intersperse table top activities such as playdough, craft or lego, with sensory social routines such as songs and games.

Your child’s Therapist will take data to track progress and collaborate with parents each week about progress.

The 1:1 Clinic is the foundation of all children’s ESDM programs.

To achieve the best outcomes, children should ideally attend 1 or 2 clinic sessions per week, as well as other relevant ESDM programs.

Early Childhood Social Therapy Group

The Early Childhood Social Therapy Group program is a 3 hour program aimed at reinforcing skills developed in 1:1 sessions and developing essential skills for effective participation in education and community settings:

This program runs from 9am – 12pm each day. Typically, children are enrolled in two or three sessions across the week and we always recommend they are also enrolled in a mainstream childcare or preschool where they will have the opportunity to generalise the skills they learn whilst in our group program.

This program integrates the best of early childhood practices and the ESDM and mimics a typical Mainstream childcare or preschool setting but is enhanced in the following ways:

Inclusion Readiness Program

This ESDM Program is an intensive program targeting the skills needed by children with ASD to participate fully in everyday life and to be included effectively in a mainstream community education setting.

This program facilitates the child’s learning, mastery and generalisation of:

The focus of the intervention is to target individual goals that work towards the child’s inclusion into natural settings and bringing the child back into the social loop.

The Early Childhood Social Therapy Group is suitable for children who are:

School Readiness Program

The CDI School Readiness Program (SRP) has been developed to equip children with any developmental delays including ASD, with the necessary skills to enter their school setting with greater confidence and improved social skills.

Operating across 2 classrooms, the program is tailored to accommodate children who will be entering a Mainstream school setting, or a Supported school setting (School for Specific Purpose or a Support Unit within a mainstream school).

The program is led by Early Childhood Teachers & Allied Health therapists who have been trained to deliver the Early Start Denver Model.

Each session will be structured to reflect a typical Kindergarten environment.

The aim of our program is to support each child to build and secure a strong sense of belonging, to develop their self-confidence and respond appropriately to others around them. We strive to facilitate a positive attitude and motivation towards learning, to experience success in a supportive educational environment.

Through play-based learning and intentionally planned experiences, while combining ESDM objectives and principles, the children will be supported to develop foundational skills in a group environment to better equip them for a smooth and successful transition to school.
