Early Childhood Intervention Australia advocates that Best Practice in Early Childhood Intervention involves engaging children in their natural environments such as at home. It highlights the many learning opportunities that are present in the home environment and emphasises the benefits of high-quality parent and child engagement.
The Child Development Institute recognises the central role of parents in each child’s life. As such, we offer opportunities for parents to learn new skills in a supported environment.
The CDI recognise that parent involvement in their child’s therapy journey is key to their progress. The more a parent can support their child in their home and community setting, the better the outcome will be for both the child and their family.
We integrate parent education into our 1:1 sessions whereby parents observe the clinic session through CCTV via an iPad and can watch exactly how the therapist is working with their child. This is a great learning opportunity and at the end of the session the therapist will reinforce things to work on at home.
Parent education sessions are also run throughout the term on a range of topics from both senior Clinical Therapists from the CDI and external partners from the local community
Individual parent coaching sessions are conducted in a clinic room at our centres, or in your home. Our therapist will coach you through activities to target your child’s ESDM goals. The objective being that you can support your child for all the hours they are with you at home and in the community, turning simple everyday interactions and routines into teaching opportunities.
The Individual Parent Coaching program will run for 10-12 weeks.
Support for parents to come to accept their child’s diagnosis or delays in their development is provided by our Clinical Director, a Clinical Psychology Registrar. Individual sessions can be booked and paid for using your child’s NDIS funding.
Our Clinical Director also provides Autism Diagnostic Assessment services using the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, the gold standard in Autism Diagnostics.
The CDI schedules regular coffee mornings for parents to come together, build a carers network and learn about a topic that will help them understand their child’s needs and provide knowledge that will assist them in supporting their child at home and in their community.
Topics will vary each fortnight and sessions will be run by both internal CDI team members and external partners from our local community.
These sessions are free of charge for all enrolled parents/carers but RSVP is required as numbers are capped.
