Our Speech Pathologists at the Child Development Institute will support the development of enjoyable ways to explore the right combination of communication methods for each child.

This means that your child receives therapy designed to meet their individual communication needs within the context of your family capacity, their peers, and the wider community.

The Child Development Institute takes an individualised family centred approach. This means, with your child’s treatment plan and sessions are tailored to suit the needs and functional goals of your family. We are passionate about helping you and your child achieve the best outcomes to help your child succeed.

Children with delayed speech and language skills are often frustrated because they cannot communicate what they want, what they need, or how they feel. This has a significant impact on their ability to function and participate and will often result in challenging behaviours due to this frustration.

Our role is to not only help your child but to provide parents and carers the support they need to understand how they can help.

Complex Care Speech Pathology Clinics

Our Speech Pathologists run weekly clinics for children who need support in their language and communication development, or have more complex challenges such as Motor Speech Disorders, including Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and Dysarthria, Developmental Language Disorders (DLD), Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties).

Speech clinics are focused on:

What happens during a Speech and Language Assessment?

During the initial consultation, we gather insights from parents about how their child communicates with family and friends, and in different settings.

Throughout the assessment our paediatric Speech Therapists will create connections with children through their interest, play and enjoyable activities to assess and identify areas where a child may need support.

We will discuss outcomes parents would like to see their child achieve, whilst also providing parent support and guidance.

What happens during a Speech Therapy session?

From the initial Speech Assessment, our therapists create a personalized communication plan based on the findings, as well as parent’s insights and priorities.

Our Speech Therapy sessions are tailored to address the functional goals using the latest evidence-based research and play-based strategies to engage your child and ensure that your speech therapy experience is functional, fun, and exciting.

To foster engagement and enjoyment, we centre activities around your child’s interests and focus on building and maintaining a trusting therapeutic relationship.

The facilities at the Child Development Institute means that your child’s Speech Therapy can take place in a setting that sees therapy centred around your child’s interests. This may be in our outdoor play space or personalised therapy rooms.

How can Speech Therapy services be funded?

The Child Development Institute can walk you through the options that are available to your child depending on their circumstances.

Services can be funded by Medicare, Private Health Insurance, private funding, and your child’s NDIS package.
